3 Steps to Obtain Training Related to Your Career
I am a college student who is graduating soon. For some reason I have put updating my resume in the back of my mind and just now realized that I need to update it with new skills. At first, I did panic, and there were tears shed, but then I picked myself up and ran to my computer to do some research!
Do you need help finding new skills for your resume, but you do not know where to start? Well start here! Even if you think you do not need new skills, these steps are still easy to follow if you change your mind!
1. Identify the Skill!
Finding skills that you need to improve on is not a hard task but involves a few minutes out of your busy day. Start by taking personality and skills tests. I recommend taking a few different tests and then taking the weak skills from those tests to use for training because the weak skills are ones you will want to work on.
After compiling a list of weak skills, choose your top 5 best ones or worse ones depending on how you look at it! A couple of my weak skills were video editing and photoshop and are also skills that would look good on my resume.
2. Research Training
You next step in this process would be to either find online training, find an internship, or job-shadow someone in your desired career field. Finding online training is most likely going to be your best bet because you will usually get a certificate for the training and it is the easiest to work around your schedule.
Now the tricky part, searching for the training. If you have a budget and are willing to spend money on training, then it will not be that difficult to find. However, if you plan to search for a free course, you might be searching for a bit or will find questionable courses. I of course spent more time looking for free online training sites because I am a broke college student trying to beef up my resume. The easiest way to figure out if the course is for you is to either search reviews on the course and site or to just jump in and test the water! And that is what I did was jump right in!
3. Completing Training
Now after choosing your courses, depending on the length, you will need to determine a process of obtaining it. This means the cost involved, extra resources needed, the steps to applying, creating an account, figuring out the number of modules, etc. This part of completing the training is also thought about in step 2 as well.
Once you figured out all the factors, you should put together a time and/or schedule plan for completing the training. For me, since I am a full-time student, I decided to treat the training as a separate class to complete on Thursday mornings. This was an easy choice for me because I do not have any classes on Thursdays, and I am more productive in the mornings. I also decided to have a 2–4-hour time limit because I usually have other homework assignments to complete.
Closing
If you are wondering if I have completed my online training yet, I sure did! These steps might seem easy but are helpful to finding the exact training you want. By identifying the skills, research training for each skill and completing the training, you will have a resume stacked with useful skills that your employer will love!
